Instagram and Facebook to get paid-for verification

Meta, the parent company of Facebook and Instagram, has announced a new paid subscription service, Meta Verified, which will allow individual users in Australia and New Zealand to pay for a blue tick verification badge. For a monthly fee of $11.99 on the web or $14.99 for iPhone users, subscribers will gain a blue badge, increased post visibility, protection from impersonators, and easier access to customer service. The feature will be available only to individual users and not yet for businesses. The change is intended to improve security and authenticity on the social media platforms. Meta has stated that the new feature will not affect previously verified accounts and that it will require users to match their Instagram and Facebook usernames with government-supplied ID documents and to use a profile picture that includes their face to be granted verification. The company has not yet announced when the feature will be rolled out to other countries. The move follows the introduction of Twitter’s premium subscription service in November 2022.
